Top 10 Movies: Best Reese Witherspoon Flicks

Water for Elephantsis out in theaters tomorrow, so we're looking at our 10 favorite Reese Witherspoon movies to celebrate the release.

Witherspoon's co-star Robert Pattinson is an international craze right now, so we thought we would look at some of the work his awesome co-star has been involved with.

Four Christmases Movie PosterHow Do You Know PosterLegally Blonde Photo

Cruel Intentions PosterSweet Home Alabama PosterPleasantville Poster

What are you favorite Reese Witherspoon movies?  Check out out top 10 and then have your say!

TOP 10 REESE WITHERSPOON FILMS:

10.Four Christmases(2008)

Four Christmases Movie Poster

This Christmas themed movie was funny and Reese Witherspoon proved she can hold her own against Vince Vaughn, but the chemistry between the two is essentially missing in this one.  Vaughn plays the same character he plays in every movie and Witherspoon compliments him well enough. She could have done much more with this one if she had a different co-star.  She plays her usual sweet self and it works, but it's not one of our favorite Witherspoon flicks.

9.Vanity Fair(2004)

Vanity Fair Poster

Witherspoon plays Rebecca (Becky) Sharp, a social-climbing commoner in class-conscious England. She will do nothing to get to the top of the social ladder and achieve what she wants.  Much like inElection, Witherspoon plays a pretty young girl who will do whatever to succeed, but ends up falling just as quickly as she rises.  Witherspoon is perky in the film and plays the part convincingly, but the movie borders on dull and could have done much more with the story.

8.How Do You Know(2010)

How Do You Know Poster

Although this film was panned by the critics, Witherspoon was actually pretty good in it.  She plays her usual charming self and rom coms seem to be a great fit for her.  Witherspoon plays a young woman who must choose between two men vying for her affections.  At the same time, she's trying to find her own way as a softball player, not accepted on the Team USA roster.

7.Sweet Home Alabama(2002)

Sweet Home Alabama Poster

Channeling her Southern roots, Witherspoon stars as a fashion designer from Alabama who has moved to New York City to escape her southern past.  She is forced to go home to Alabama to finalize her divorce, which her current fiance doesn't know about.  She soon realizes she may be more at home in Alabama then she thinks.  Witherspoon is delightful as a southern girl.  She seems at home in the role and it shows with her southern charm and grace.

6.Pleasantville(1998)

Pleasantville Poster

One of Witherspoon's earlier films,Pleasantvilleis an interesting commentary on racism in society.  Using the technique of black and white vs. color,Pleasantvilleis a picturesque town in total black and white, when David and Jennifer get trapped in the world from the future, they begin to bring in outside influences and slowly the town start turning from black and white to color.  The"color"folks are ostracized and mistreated. Witherspoon essentially plays two characters in this film -- Jennifer from the present and Betty Sue, her black and white Pleasantville counterpart.  She is a"bad girl"in the new town, but slowly becomes accustom to the lifestyle.

5.Rendition(2007)

Rendition Photo

Another dramatic role for the actress, Witherspoon plays Isabella, a woman desperate to find out what happened to her husband is taken by the CIA to be questioned about his involvement with a known terrorist.  She questions the authorities only to have them pretend not to even know who her husband is.  Witherspoon does a great job with this role as well and she plays a convincing wife and mother, again showing her versatility when it comes to playing dramatic roles.

4.Election(1999)

Election Poster

Another great movie in a big year for Witherspoon. She was nominated for many film festival and critics choice award for her performance as Tracy Flick inElection.Tracy is a manipulative overachiever who will do anything to get into a good college.  She will also do anything to win class president when she becomes nominated.  Witherspoon is hilarious in this movie and proves she has great comedic skills as an actress, a great juxtaposition to her other 1999 movie,Cruel Intentions.

3.Cruel Intentions(1999)

Cruel Intentions Poster

1999 seemed to be the year Reese Witherspoon caught Hollywood's radar.  She starred in three films that year, two which make our list.  Cruel Intentionswas a risque teen drama, featuring some of the biggest young stars at the time, including Sarah Michelle Gellar, Selma Blair, and Ryan Phillippe.  Witherspoon was the lesser-known of the three, but that didn't mean anything for her performance.  She played the quintessential good girl Annette Hargrove, in a corrupt boarding school where teens acted more like grown-ups. It was a great performance by Witherspoon in a very"it"movie.

2.Legally Blonde(2001)

Legally Blonde Picture

Every actor has a performance that makes their career. Legally Blondewas that performance for Reese Witherspoon.  She was well-known in Hollywood for a couple roles prior to this one, but no one could have guessed how popular this movie would be.  WhenLegally Blondeexploded onto the scene in 2001, Reese Witherspoon became an automatic star.  Elle Woods is an unforgettable character who showed women can be cute, fun, and taken seriously all at the same time.  A silly teen movie on the surface, it had a great message about female empowerment and breaking the stereotypes.

1.Walk the Line(2005)

Walk the Line Photos

How do you argue with this one?  This is the movie that turned Reese into a Hollywood heavyweight.  Sure, she was well-known and praised for her comedic roles, but this dramatic performance showed how diverse she could be as an actress. Witherspoon nailed the role of June Carter Cash in this biopic about Johnny Cast, played equally well by Joaquin Phoenix.  Witherspoon even earned her first Oscar for Best Actress with this film.

EXCLUSIVE: Mark Povinelli Talks Water for Elephants, Working with Robert Pattinson

Mark Povinelli caught up with Reel Movie News to talk about his most recent project,Water for Elephants, which opens in theaters this Friday, April 22.

He plays Kinko, who befriends Robert Pattinson's character, Jacob.

"I read the book a couple of years ago and I was excited because there was a great character, that happened to be a little person and that’s very rare that you see that in literature or certainly in film and television."He tell us of his character."He was a fully developed character, and that made me that much more eager to play him."

Povinelli also talks about his role in the upcomingSnow White, opposite Julia Roberts.

Check out the rest of the interview below.

Mark Povinelli Talks Water for Elephants

Talk to me about your role in Water for Elephants, and why you were drawn to that project.

I play Kinko, who’s real name is Walter, and he is the reluctant roommate of Robert Pattinson’s character Jacob. When Jacob rides on the train, August throws him into Kinko’s tiny little box car as his roommate. Kinko is rather gruff and unfriendly individual. Throughout the course of events through the movie, Jacob wins him over and Kinko ends up becoming one of his biggest allies in a world that Jacob that Jacob has very few allies in.

I came upon this by my agent sending me out on an audition. I read the book a couple of years ago and I was excited because there was a great character, that happened to be a little person and that’s very rare that you see that in literature or certainly in film and television. He was a fully developed character, and that made me that much more eager to play him. I just enjoyed it for that sake, and didn’t think much about it being a movie. When this came along, I bought the book on my Kindle and I reread the book in a night and a half which wasn’t hard to do since it’s such an easy read. I knew that I had to do whatever it took to get the role or put my best effort. I went to audition, and it worked out that they wanted me. It was a no-brainer for me to work with talent like Francis {Lawrence} and screenplay of Richard LaGravenese and based on that book with that cast. It was an easy decision for me.

How was it working with Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon as costars?

I didn’t know a lot of Rob’s stuff, but I was aware of him. I’d seen theHarry Pottermovies but I hadn’t seen any ofTwilightfilms. He was a name to me, and not really somebody I could closely identify with. When I went in to work with him, I was like‘who is this guy?’ When I started to understand the Rob fascination, it turns out that Rob is a really down to earth, sweet, kind of silly, very bright young man. That was the thing that surprised me the most. I thought of him as a Tiger Beat, Teen Beat matinee idol, when actually in this film he’s a leading man. He’s a rugged leading man with still a sweet boyish face that can really carry a film. He carries two hours of this epic story on his back and I think he carries it off beautifully. One of the charming things about Rob is that when we’re not filming, often times he’s off reading a book and he’s very well read. He understood so much about the depression era in America, so much about circuses. He would reference old movies and old pictures he’d seen and done research on. He’s not just‘what movie am I doing next?’, he really dives into a role and I think he’s an actor. He does his work and research and he comes prepared.

I was intimated by Reese. I’ve been a fan of Reese’s forever. She’s been a huge star for so long, so I knew her work so well that I was intimidated to work with her. Rob and I had done some rehearsals, but Reese, the first time I’d met her was the first day of filming. The first shot on the first day was Reese, Rob and I filming, and I thought‘great, cant we do something a little less intense? Can we do a wide shot with an elephant or something?’ {laughs} I got thrown right in there and what was great about Reese was that she made me feel at ease right away. When the camera came on and we started working, she was such a giving actress. If the camera was on me, she was on the other side of the camera working just as hard as if the camera was on her, and really trying to make me look as good as I can. You want that from another actor, but you don’t always expect it from actors that have such a high level as her. She could have been somebody you’d never heard of before or a superstar, it didn’t matter to her. She was an actor working with another actor, and that was really refreshing and wonderful. It immediately put me at ease for the rest of shooting, frankly. The reputation I’d heard about Reese was that she was professional and that she expects professionalism from everyone else around her. While that’s true, as soon as we started working together and seeing that we were professionals, she could not have been more pleasant or warmer. I appreciated the fact that she appreciates that people are there to do the work. You can tell, in her, from the moment you walk on set that she’s there to give her all and give her best performance.

People are saying this is Rob’s real breakout role. It would be great to see‘Academy-award winning actor’ before his name as well.

I think at some point it’s going to be there, whether it’s for this or not, he’s got the chops to be able to be that guy at some point. It’s a matter of when, not if. The thing about this film, is that Robisthis film, in the sense that it is completely told from his characters prospective. He’s in every shot of every scene and knowing that, we knew that he was going to make or break this film. I really do, honestly, think he makes it. He looks fantastic, to no ones surprised, but he carries himself and is so committed to the character. He’s on screen with Reese and Christoph and he absolutely holds his own and totally delivers. Everyone has this big question of can he do this, and he’s got this big target on his forehead. He can, and he did.

Was it easy to transport yourself to that period of time?

I love playing characters that are in period pieces. I enjoyed the melodrama that the book and screenplay create and Kinko is a pretty hard scrabbled fighter that has had a rough, rough life. Certainly I’ve had it much easier than him, but there’s a scence of being born with such a profound physical difference, as I am, and he is, there’s a connection there that you can understand being on the fringed of society. Tapping into the tough exterior that he has to have and seriousness that he has to present to keep himself alive was really exciting for me.

There’s been a lot of talk about the charms of Thai. What was it like working with Queenie?

Queenie was probably the most talented character I worked with on set. In the sense that she never missed a queue, she never missed performing a trick. If there was ever a time that the scene didn’t work, it was because I messed up the command, not that Queenie didn’t deliver. Queenie is a total pro, his real name is actually Augie, and he’s a boy. It was a little weird because I had to bounce back from‘good girl’ to‘good boy’ all of the time. {laughs}

How happy are you with how the film has come out?

I am ecstatic with how the film came out. It’s really hard to have perspective after this whole process, but I was crying at the end of the movie. I don’t know if I was crying because of this being a year-long process that was finally being on the screen, but I think most of it was because that story took me to a place that moved me. It’s a beautiful film, and it’s a very classic film. I think it will instantly fall into that realm of instant, old-time classic films. I’m really proud of it. I’m not totally surprised that it’s being called the best movie of the year. Everyone is just so strong in it. Christoph is amazing, and it really comes across onscreen, which is so satisfying. I know how hard everybody worked, and Francis for the past few years.

Speaking of Christoph, he plays a great villain.

Yes, he does. That was my favorite part about the experience. You just have no indication that he’s got that in him when you hang out with him. We had a couple nights out in Tennessee, and I felt like I was working on some basement theater production with a veteran actor. There was no sense of celebrity or star or ego about him. He’s really funny, witty, and charming gentleman. Then he gets on camera and he can be sadistic, and you go‘where did that come from?’ It’s probably good that I don’t know where that comes from. {laughs} You kind of look at him and go,‘you can’t be that same guy’. It’s great.

You’ve also booked Snow White opposite Julia Roberts. Are you excited to work with her?

It’s hard for me to come up with a bigger star than Julia Roberts. Again, I’ve been following hers, and a fan of hers for 20 years. To think 20 years ago, if someone had told me I’d be able to work back to back with the Reese’s and Rob’s and Christoph’s of the world and then go right into something with Julia Roberts is very exciting. I’m thrilled to see what that’s going to be like. Obviously everyone knows the story, but the nice twist for me on this is the dwarfs, as written now, are not your standard Disney dwarfs with beards hiding out in the woods. They’re these Robin Hood thieves that work together with Snow White to gain her kingdom back. I think it’s going to be a ton of fun, and I can’t wait.

Tell me about the pilot you filmed with Chelsea Handler.

There’s probably not much more of a crossing-over from a serious period drama like Water for Elephants to a contemporary, raunchy ridiculous Chelsea Handler. We just had a great time. The scripts hilarious, and hopefully NBC will like it. I think we have something really cool there. A lot of actors talk about going from a serious film to a comedy for some relief, and now I can walk around saying that.

EXCLUSIVE: Ross Thomas Talks Soul Surfer

Making a film based on a true story is often hard work because you want to play the real people as accurately as possible.  Ross Thomas knows exactly what this is like and spent a lot of time with the real Hamilton family for his role in the upcomingSoul Surfer, based on Bethany Hamilton's inspiring story.

Hamilton lost her arm in a shark accident and courageously got back into surfing, beating all odds.

Ross plays Bethany's brother Noah Hamilton in the film and took time to talk to Reel Movie News about his experiences filming the movie.

He told us he took this role very seriously, even interviewing the real Noah on camera before filming.

"We as people have so much in common that I was able to pretty much get inside of his character and understand him from when I first met him,"he said of the real Noah Hamilton."Right when I got to Hawaii I took he and his wife out, I flipped the switch and I took out my camera and I interviewed Noah on camera."

Check out the rest of the interview below.

Ross Thomas Star in Soul Surfer

Since this movie is based on a true story, what was your reaction when you’d first heard of this girls encounter and story?

I remember hearing about Bethany’s story when it first happened. I was one of millions of people around the world that were first and foremost, shocked by the event. Shark attacks are always making headlines despite who the person is, sort of always lurks there, no pun intended. Everyone has that fear of the ocean on some level. I’m immediately drawn to those types of stories, especially if it’s a comeback story, it’s just a survival story.

It’s pretty amazing. Following her path and her continual success and growing from that accident was a fun story to watch. I’ve been following her career for a while now and watching Bethany surf with one arm, she’s amazing, as she was with two.

Tell me about your role in Soul Surfer.

In the film I play her older brother, Noah Hamilton. We as people have so much in common that I was able to pretty much get inside of his character and understand him from when I first met him. Right when I got to Hawaii I took he and his wife out, I flipped the switch and I took out my camera and I interviewed Noah on camera. I really wanted to let him free flow about what his experience was in this time of his life. I went back and studied those tapes and him and the way he talks and his mannerisms. Just understanding the essence of his nature, I just had to look at what he had done, being the older brother in the family. Noah has such a big heart, and he’s such a strong supporter. I really wanted to know from him what the initial experience was like when you hear that your sibling had just been attacked, and I could relate because my younger brother had a horrific accident as well. When stuff like that happens, family comes together in a way you’ve never seen before. The family unit becomes closer through something like that. He told me the initial emotion went inward for him. We all deal with pain and tragedy in different ways. It doesn’t mean Noah wasn’t feeling anything; it was very heavy on him. He had issues with the media surrounding his sister. He took on the role of the protector and shielded. To this day, Noah is her exclusive photographer and promoter.

Why were you attracted to this role?

When the opportunity came to be a part of the film, I didn’t even wait a beat to think about it. I immediately wanted to be involved because I knew how big of a project it is and how important the message and story is to be told to the international community. Knowing the story and having been following it prior to this movie coming into production, it’s a story that needed to be told. It had all of the elements of a film that I as an actor want to be a part of. It’s not only there for entertainment purposes, but it’s spreading a positive message and can create some big change around the world. Everyone felt honored to be a part of the story; we all know how important the message of the movie is.

I’d also worked withSean McNamaraon several projects before. He and I did a surf series in Hawaii calledBeyond the Break.I felt so lucky and blessed to go back to Hawaii and work with him.

Did you meet Bethany and her family?

I spent a lot of time with Bethany. Actually, I consider her one of my good friends now, which is pretty amazing. The whole Hamilton family was present throughout the whole shooting of the film. It was interesting for me as an actor because I’d never done a project where the living people of the story we were telling were on set watching all of the tapes. It was a bit intimidating. That family has a tremendous amount of love, and they’re really amazing people; a joy to be around. Noah and I have a lot in common, we’re the same age and both grew up in a large family with very strong moral and family values. When I got to Hawaii, I was welcomed with open arms by the Hamilton family. We all grabbed a board and went out in the ocean, it was the ultimate icebreaker. It was as if I was part of the family, off the bat. On my days off I’d go surf with Bethany and she’d totally school me. {laughs}

Being a surfer yourself, do you think you would have the courage to go back out there?

I think that is a question that no one can answer until it happens to you, or if it happens to you. I’d like to think that I would, but I can’t say for sure. I think if you love something as strongly and as deeply as Bethany does surfing, really at the end of the day, if your heart is that investing in something, I do believe through courage and bravery and hope, you can overcome fear and darkness and see light. The ocean provides such a wealth of joy and happiness for so many people. Something like a shark attack is so rare, I don’t think I could stay out of the ocean. Knowing her story now, if anything ever happened to be I’d look at Bethany as a sense of encouragement and inspiration.

Why is the message of this movie so important?

I think it’s going to strike a tone with audiences everywhere and leave people with a big smile and a sense of inspiration.

Producers Talk Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 - SPOILERS

The end ofHarry Potteris looming closer and as the date for the final film is nearing, HP fans are getting even more excited about what's to come.

Cinemablend had a chance to sit down withHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallowsproducers to get some tidbits are the final film.

Here's how producers decided to approach the final film - which is very similar to the layout of the books as well.

Deathly Hallows Part 2 Poster

“By making them {from Harry's perspective} it created something of a narrative structure, since they’re not organic cinematic narratives, the Harry Potter films. They’re meandering, they go off on these tangents. Inevitably it’s going to be an unconventional structure, but wherever we can impose some sort order on it is important.”

SinceDeathly Hallowshas been split into two films, producers were able to put even more details and scenes from the book, they would have otherwise had to scrap.

SPOILERS!  Read more below:

Neville Longbottom Takes a Beating

Producers Barron and Heyman described a couple of the scenes they were able to leave in the movie since it's split into two parts.  Among the scenes the producers say wouldn't have made it into the film, had it been only one: Harry's first encounter with Dumbledore between life and death, which Harry envisions to be King's Cross and the exploration of Snape's memories (which explains A LOT!) after Snape is killed.

“We also wanted to make a bigger scene of Harry’s confrontation with Snape. Snape’s role in the film is minimal, and it was minimal in the second half of the book, and yet you wanted to have the emotional investment when you see his past story {the memory Harry views in the Pensieve}. We wanted to build that up in order for it to have its emotional impact.”
